<p>The 2nd Bombardment Wing (Very Heavy) was activated in October 1947 operating the B-29 at Davis-Monthan AFB and has subsequently operated the B-50, B-47 and B-52 together with KB-29, KC-97 and KC-135 tankers. The unit moved to Hunter AFB, GA in 1950 before relocating to its present home at Barksdale AFB in April 1963 replacing the 4238th Strategic Wing. The 2nd BW won the Fairchild Trophy as the top bomber team at SAC's Proud Shield bombing and navigation competition in 1963. It operated two squadrons of B-52Gs together with a KC-135A and KC-10A squadron within Strategic Air Command. The majority of SAC assets were transferred to Air Combat Command when the former inactivated on 1 June 1992. The KC-10As were reassigned to the 458th Operations Group as part of the 22nd ARW under Air Mobility Command. The unit was redesignated the 2nd Wing in October 1991, and began exchanging the B-52G for the B-52H during 1992. The KC-135Q tankers joined AMC in October 1993, enabling the parent wing to revert to Bomb Wing designation. The 11th Bomb Squadron formed on 1 July 1994 as the formal training unit. The T-37Bs of the Companion Trainer Program were exchanged for T-38As in October 1994.
